Non-Contact Thermometer: A Blend of Beauty and Medical Precision

Revolutionizing Medical Devices with Aesthetics and Functionality

Introducing the Non-Contact Thermometer by Tobia Repossi, a body temperature monitor that redefines the conventional design of medical devices. Inspired by the need for a more appealing design in the Asian market, this thermometer is a blend of beauty and medical precision, designed to facilitate the work of doctors even in remote parts of China.

The Non-Contact Thermometer stands out for its unique design properties. Unlike typical medical devices, it is not designed as a 'gun', but rather as a beauty care product. This innovative approach caters to the specific needs and traditions of the Chinese market in terms of design for medical devices. The thermometer is part of a group of products, including an Oximeter and a Blood Pressure Monitor, aimed at improving the efficiency of medical practices.

The design of the Non-Contact Thermometer was inspired by surveys and personal interviews with Chinese doctors and patients. The research highlighted the negative perception of 'gun' shaped products and readability issues related to data on the screen. The design process took into account these findings, resulting in a product that not only meets medical requirements but also appeals to the aesthetic preferences of the target market.

Made of ABS and Acrylic, the Non-Contact Thermometer measures 60 mm x 60 mm x 150 mm. It is operated from a button on the top and needs to be used at a distance of 5 - 10 cm from the head. A recessed LED screen reports the precise body temperature in seconds. The thermometer transmits data via Bluetooth to any smartphone with an app, and then via the Internet to the hospital through the Bewell Connect cloud. It comes with a micro USB charger and dock station.

The Non-Contact Thermometer was developed over a year in Shenzhen, where Visiomed has its offices and production unit. The design project faced the challenge of creating a product that would be accepted in the Chinese market, where 'gun' shaped products had previously failed. Despite these challenges, the design team, including Tobia Repossi, Draco Xia, and Aaron Huang, successfully created a product that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The Non-Contact Thermometer has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Non-Contact Thermometer is a testament to the potential of design in transforming the perception and usability of medical devices.
